Camilla Cox

Camilla Nadine (Bricker) Cox, of Piggott, Ark., passed away Thursday January 3, 2019, at the Piggott Community Hospital in Piggott. She was born in Piggott on May 28, 1923, to Troy and Veda Ethyl (Bess) Bricker, and was the oldest daughter of seven children. Surviving sisters are Getonia Clark of Florrisant Mo. and Colleen Arthur of Rolla, Mo. Predeceasing her were her parents and remaining brothers and sisters, Harley Bricker, Amon Bricker, Jane Groves and Foye Speer.

Camilla married Dorris Edward Cox on May 1, 1946 in Piggott. They had three children, Alan Dale, married to Bonnie Alexander; Judy Catherine, married to Michael Phillips; and Carol Ann. Beloved grandchildren are Larissa Cox and Kevin Cox of Fayetteville, Ark.

Camilla attended college in Batesville at what is now Lyon College for two years, and taught school for a brief time. She later worked at the Piggott Times office as a linotype operator for several years. After she married Dorris, she worked as the bookkeeper at Cox Lumber Company in Piggott until she retired.

Camilla was active in the First Baptist Church of Piggott serving as Sunday School teacher for many age groups over the years. She was the church clerk for over 40 years, holding the position longer than anyone else ever had. She was active in all church activities, and if the doors were open, she and Dorris were there. Dorris and Camilla were very active in the youth programs for all the years that their children were growing up.

Camillas hobby and passion was genealogy and local history. She helped to found the first club in town for genealogy and wrote and edited their newsletter for years. She published a cemetery book on Clay County. In recent years she has been writing a weekly column in the CCTD on county history and family lines of Clay County people. Her blog may also be found elsewhere on this website. She was known to many as the expert and local resource for genealogy. In recent years much of her research was donated to the Piggott Library to be used by future generations.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 6, at the Piggott Mortuary with Bro. Rondell Richardson officiating. Burial will be in the Piggott Cemetery.
