Lady Mohawks Edged by Manila, Fall at Hoxie
The Piggott Lady Mohawks began play in 2019 with a lopsided conference loss at Hoxie on Friday. Monday night they visited Manila in 3A-3 play and were outscored in overtime, as they fell to the Lady Lions. Tuesday evening they visited Campbell, and came up short against the Lady Camels.
The PHS girls had no answer for the potent Lady Mustangs in their conference tilt, as the home team notched an 85-31 victory at HHS. The Lady Mustangs, recently ranked third in 3A in the state, pushed to a 24-12 lead after one, led 45-22 at intermission and 73-26 going into the fourth quarter.
The junior Lady Mohawks also fell at Hoxie, as they dropped a 45-9 decision to the home team.
The Tribe made the trip to Manila Monday night for conference play, and dropped a pair of games—the varsity contest in OT. Getting off to a strong start, the host Lady Lions pushed to the early lead and enjoyed a 14-3 advantage after one. The Lady Mohawks responded with a 16-4 performance in the second, as they took a 19-18 lead into the locker room at the break.
The two teams swapped baskets in the third, as the PHS girls led 34-32 entering the fourth quarter of play. Edging the visitors in the fourth by a field goal, the home team pushed back to tie the game at 39-39 at the end of regulation. In the extra frame, the Lady Lions outscored the Mohawks 6-3 to set the final score.
Mohawk Claire Bellers led all scorers with 19 points on the game, while junior Sassy Rahn was also in double figures with 11.
The junior high contest also went to the Lady Lions as they posted a 38-22 win.
In their contest at Campbell, the host team edged the Tribe by a final of 67-52, as they now stand at 2-12 overall and 1-9 in conference play.
The Lady Mohawks are slated to take part in the FNB Battle of the Border at Corning on Saturday and will host the Trumann Lady Wildcats on Monday, Jan. 14.
