Mohawks Post Homecoming Win, Fall in Conference Games
The Piggott Mohawks split a pair in conference last week at home, beating Walnut Ridge Tuesday night in the annual homecoming contest then falling to Osceola on Friday. Tuesday evening they visited the Corning Bobcats to conclude their annual home-and-away rivalry set and came up short.
Senior Isaac Langley had a huge game in the win over the Bobcats, accounting for nearly half the Tribe's scoring as he had 22 points in the 59-51 win. The Mohawks also got a strong game from senior Trey Gossett, as he finished with 17 points.
The homecoming contest was a tight one throughout, as the Bobcats squeaked-out a 15-12 advantage by the end of the first quarter. But, the Mohawks responded in the second and outscored their visitors 14-12 in the quarter as they took a 26-24 advantage into the break.
The home team pushed the lead to 38-33 by the end of the third quarter, and extended it to an eight point advantage by the buzzer. The Mohawk defense was also up to the task, holding the Bobcat's top scorer to well below his season average.
In the early game, the young Junior Mohawks put up a good fight as they came up short 43-40 to the Bobcats.
Meeting for the second time this year, the Mohawks still could find no answer for the talented Osceola Seminoles as they dropped an 83-56 decision Friday night at PHS. The visitors came out of the locker room hot in the 3A-3 contest, and led 29-11 by the end of the first. The Tribe cut the lead to 10, 39-29, at the break and trailed the Seminoles 65-40 going into the fourth quarter en route to the loss.
The early game also went to the Seminoles, as they beat the Junior Mohawks 48-21.
Tuesday evening the Tribe was swept at Corning, with the senior boys falling 74-46 while the junior boys were edged 42-26.
The Mohawk eighth grade and senior “B” teams are slated to visit KIPP Blytheville on Friday. Beginning Monday, Feb. 4, the junior district tournament will be held at Osceola. Meanwhile, the Mohawk senior boys and girls will close out the regular season, and mark senior night, as they host Rivercrest on Monday, Feb. 4, at PHS.
