Mohawk Hoops Teams Fall in District Play
Both Piggott Mohawk teams were in action Saturday in first round play in the 3A-3 district basketball tournament at Manila. Both squads drew opponents they had beaten during the regular season, but the addition of players moving up from the junior high squads seemed to be the difference as neither PHS team could hang with their opponents.
In the boys contest, the Mohawks drew the Hoxie Mustangs and fell by a final score of 80-61. Leading the way were the three seniors, as Braden Ralph finished with 16 while Trey Gossett and Isaac Langley had 15 each in the loss. The Tribe had split with the Mustangs in the regular season, falling 66-65 at home in only their second game, then rebounding for an 83-81 double-overtime win at Hoxie in early December.
With the loss the Mohawks end their first season under Coach Chris Brantley with a record of 5-22 and 2-14 in conference play.
The Lady Mohawks drew the Lady Pirates of Gosnell in the first round, a team they had beaten twice during the regular season—including a 46-33 decision in late November and a 40-32 win on Jan. 10. But, despite 24 points from senior post player Brielle Burkman, the Tribe fell by a final of 65-36.
With the loss the Lady Mohawks end their first season under Coach Laura Brantley with a record of 4-20 and 2-14 in the 3A-3. On the bright side, they lose only Burkman and guard Bailey Davis to graduation and will return a wealth of talent and experience to next year's squad.
