Cougars Advance to District Title Game
The Rector Cougars advanced to the championship game of the 2A-3 district tournament at Monette Thursday evening with a 52-38 win over the Marmaduke Greyhounds. After splitting with the 'Hounds in the regular season, and dropping a non-conference game to them in the RHSSHOF classic, it was sweet revenge for the boys in blue. Trey Rodden and Adam Romine paced the squad with 15 each, and senior Kale Hardin had a huge second half after getting into foul trouble early. The Cougars will next take on the Bay Yellowjackets in the late game tonight, set to tip around 7:30 at BIC. The game had been scheduled for 8:30, but weather concerns have prompted tourney officials to move both finals back an hour. As a result, the girls final between Melbourne and Riverside will tip at 6 p.m. as opposed to the earlier-reported 7.
“I'm looking forward to getting another shot at them,” Cougar Coach Matt Mills said after the win.
The top-seeded Jackets had a much rougher path to the championship, as they had to go into triple overtime to get by the host Mustangs 49-43 in Thursday's nightcap.
In the girls bracket, second-seeded Riverside beat Marmaduke 38-28 to advance to the title game, while the top-seeded Melbourne Lady Bearkatz rolled over Sloan-Hendrix 70-26. They'll meet in the early game tonight.
All four of the semi-finalist have locked-in spots in next week's regional tournament at Rector High School, with the first round set for Wednesday and Thursday. The semi-finals will be played Friday and the championship games, and third-fourth seeding contests, on Saturday.
