Plans continue for the second annual Vietnam Veterans Celebration in Rector, set for Saturday, March 30. This year the featured honorees are all Purple Heart recipients. “If you, or a friend, have received a Purple Heart in the service of our country, reglardless of which war, please send us the specifics of that honor,” spokesperson Christa Hedrick noted. “You can get the information to me or Joey Pruett, or you can post it to our Facebook page-Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home.”

Once again this year the celebration will include a parade, set to begin at 2 p.m, which will make its way south down Main Street in Rector to Veterans Memorial Park. At the park a special ceremony will be held to recognize Purple Heart recipients, with entertainment provided by Chrissy Jennings Pazanowski, formerly of Rector.

Among the speakers scheduled for the afternoon is Everett Evans, Commander of the Northeast Arkansas Chapter #709 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

“All veterans of all wars are invited to come celebrate with us as we once again acknowledge Vietnam Veterans Memorial Day,” Hedrick added. “You may walk in the parade or we'll provide you with a ride. The veterans are also invited to a free fish dinner provided by the men of the First United Methodist Church.”

A new addition this year is a visit by the Arkansas Run for the Fallen Traveling Memorial. The Arkansas Run for the Fallen Traveling Memorial has been displayed across the state of Arkansas over the past few years in a number of cities such as Maumelle, Imboden, Mountain Home, Benton, Jacksonville and Cabot, among others. The memorial consists of a 3x5 foot flag and placard with a short biography for each Arkansas service member who has died while serving since Sept. 11, 2001. While visiting the display, people are able to walk among the flags and read the biographies of the heroes being honored.

Event organizers note the memorial will be on display in Rector from Sunday, March 24, through Sunday, March 31.
