Lady Cougars Set for Regional Play
The Rector Lady Cougars were scheduled to play their first round 2A-North regional softball tournament game at 3 p.m. on Thursday, at McCrory, as they were slated to take on the host Jaguars. But, rain and field conditions have prompted site officials to postpone the first round, with the new schedule to be announced.
The RHS squad fell to Riverside in a 10-inning marathon on Saturday in the third-fourth place seeding game in the 2A-3 district at Melbourne, earning the contest with the top ranked McCrory squad from 2A-6.
The Cougars moved into the seeding game after losing a 2-0 decision to Salem on Friday in semi-final play. The Lady Greyhounds scored a run in the fourth, and another in the fifth, while holding the RHS girls scoreless in the contest.
In the seeding game with Riverside, neither team scored in the first inning with the Lady Cougars plating a run in the home half of the second to take a 1-0 lead. The score remained the same through the third, fourth and fifth innings, with the Lady Rebels scoring a run to knot the score at 1-1 in the top of the sixth.
The score remained knotted through the seventh, sending the game into extras, and remained at 1-1 after eight innings. Riverside plated a run in the top of the ninth to make it 2-1, with the Rector squad answering with a run of their own in the home half of the inning, as it went to the 10th inning tied at 2-2.
The Lady Rebels scored two in the top of the 10th, then held the Lady Cougars at bey in the home half of the inning to post the win.
Riverside scored their four runs on nine hits, and had one error, while the Lady Cougars scored their two runs on four hits, and also had one error.
In the late game on Saturday the Lady 'Hounds were beaten by the host Melbourne Lady Bearkatz as they finished second in the tourney.
The Lady Cougars draw a tough McCrory team in the first round, as the Jaguars sport a record of 20-2 with their only losses to 5A Sheridan (20-4) and 3A Rose Bud (28-1). In the other first round regional games, Melbourne faces Marked Tree in the 10 a.m. start; Riverside and EPC meet in the 12:30 game; Rector and McCrory meet in the 3 p.m. contest and Salem and Barton square off in the 5:30 nightcap.
At this point it's unclear if conditions will be favorable on Friday, and any further updates will be posted to our Facebook page.
The top four teams will advance to next week's 2A state softball tournament being held beginning May 9, at the Mountain Home Parks and Recreation facilities and hosted by Salem High School.
