Municipal Filing Period Underway
The filing period for this year's municipal election opened at noon on Wednesday, July 29, and will end at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 5. This year all four seats on the Rector City Council are up for election, along with two on the Piggott City Council along with the position of Rector recorder/treasurer now held by Sheila Dale.
In switching to alternating terms, two spots on Rector Council are for two years while the other two are four year terms. Standing for two year terms are the positions currently held by Lark Sigsby and Anthony Dowdy while the positions now held by Iva Fahr and David Romine are for four year terms.
Meanwhile, the positions currently held by Jeff Benbrook and Tracy Cole will be determined on Piggott City Council.
Clay County Clerk Pat Poole reports prospective candidates may pick-up applications and petitions at her offices in the Piggott and Corning courthouses. Those running for municipal office must reside in the city in which they are filing, be a qualified elector, be 18 or older and have not been convicted of a crime involving “embezzlement of public money, bribery, forgery, theft or other crime involving dishonesty, including misdemeanors.”
The races will be determined during the upcoming General Election, Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Meanwhile, a special meeting of the Clay County Election Commissioners will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, at the courthouse in Piggott. During the gathering the commissioners will be deciding the protocols to follow for the upcoming Nov. 3, General Election. The public is invited to attend, although face mask and social-distancing practices must be observed in the courthouse.
