Martha Jo-Ann Redd Martha Jo-Ann Redd passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, surrounded by her loved ones who will always cherish their memories of her. She was 83 years old.

Alla Jean Priest Alla Jean Priest, 91, of Marmaduke, Ark., passed away at home with her family on January 21, 2023. Alla Jean was born October 2, 1931, in Cave City to the late Bonnie and Roena Lewallen.

Clay County Quorum Court holds first meeting of year
Clay County Quorum Court met in regular session for the first meeting of the year on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at the courthouse in Piggott. This was the first meeting for newly elected members, Randy Kingston, George Lowe, Neal Smith, other justices present were Patrick Patterson, Dennis Haines, David Hatcher and Jody Henderson. Absent was David Cagle and newly elected Brad Green.

Basketball homecoming planned at local schools
Rector High School will observe basketball homecoming for 2023 with the traditional ceremonies and game set for Friday, Jan. 27.
Piggott to host Rivercrest Jan. 31
Piggott High School will mark basketball homecoming on Tuesday, Jan. 31, as they host the Rivercrest Colts. This year’s royalty will be introduced at the traditional as-sembly in the high school gymnasium at 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday and will again be introduced between the junior high and senior high boy’s game that night.
CCTD single copies to increase Feb. 1
Due to higher costs to produce and deliver the newspaper, on February 1, individual copies of the Clay County Times-Democrat will increase to $1 a copy. Newspaper racks will be changed accordingly when the increase takes place along with the inside newspaper dealers. As always, we appreciate your support of the Clay County Times-Democrat.
HPMEC Spring Reading Retreat planned
The Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum has announced April 28 and April 29, 2023, as the dates for the Spring Reading Retreat. Registration is $160 due by April 1, with a $25 late registration fee for late entries. The fee may be refunded until April 15. Please register as soon as possible and make lodging reservations as the retreat is limited to 18 participants. For more information, please contact the museum at 870-598-3487.
Imagery, fantasy, and magic make reading more beautiful
Beauty in language and scenes that allow the senses to slip between fantasy and reality contribute to reading for pleasure. In the case of Where the Crawdad’s Sing, I must say that reading the book was far and away more enjoyable than seeing the movie, though I liked the movie.

Polar Plunge set for Saturday
Once again this year a popular fundraiser for Special Olympics Arkansas will be held. Set at Crowley’s Ridge State Park-Lake Ponder, the 2023 Polar Plunge season is at hand.
