Heat Wave
Okay, it has really been summertime this past week. The heat and humidity have been smothering. Reminded me of my years of living on the Texas coast, before residential air conditioning was common. The air was so hot and heavy it was hard to get a decent breath outside. Today we have a break and a little rain, so things are looking better for a while. Then I suppose we will have to get ready for August. Oh my. I am such a winter child.
The Rector First General Baptist Church is having Bible School this week.6:00 – 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Call 595-3825 for more information. That is the Rector First General Baptist Church across the street from Harps. There will be games, candy and snacks. The kids will love it.
Lots going on at the Rector Community Museum these days. Thursday evening, we had another mini concert featuring Melissa Edwards and Robert Layer. It was well attended, and everyone enjoyed the music. Thank you, Melissa and Robert, for bringing your talents to our town. I can hardly wait to hear what the museum has in store for next month.
Sarah Seay Vangilder will be back at the museum again on the second Saturday to host another Healthy Living class. She and Jessie Malin like to share ideas, recipes, and suggestions for living a healthy lifestyle. It’s a free event and walk-ins are welcome. So, drop by, take a look around and get healthy. Feel free to make a donation.
I also want to remind you that you may donate items of local interest to the museum. They are particularly interested in memorabilia from the Ford Theater right now as they are working on a Ford Theater Room in the back of the Museum.
They have also started to think about Labor Day. It is almost August, after all. They are wanting antique framed pictures for window decorations. Take a look at your photographs and see if there are any you would like to donate or lend the museum. Antique, they tell me, is from 1969 and older. I was a little offended by that, myself. I hadn’t realized that I am considered to be an antique. Maybe I will volunteer to sit in a rocker in the window.
Speaking of Labor Day: The Ultimate Oldies will be at the Community Center the Friday before Labor Day with a special line-up for your listening pleasure. Tickets will go on sale soon. So, mark your calendars. They always have a great show.
School starts on August 13. How come summer vacation always seems too short? Get out there and have some summer fun while you can.
That’s it for this week. Watch for the storms, stay cool, when you can and enjoy all the summer activities that make you happy.
Warnings include: Don’t leave children, pets or elderly people in cars during the summer months. It gets hot really fast in a closed car. Also, if you have outside pets, be sure they have shade, shelter and water. Those plastic pre-fab shelters are not cool. They magnify the heat and become an oven. Please take care of your outside animals.
I will be glad to post your Labor Day plans for reunions and functions in the column if you will let me know. I will also put them on the city calendar. Give me a call, send me an email or facebook me.
What else is going on that you would like to see in this column. Give me a heads up and I will share it with everyone else. Email: porchswing@newwavecomm.net . Phone number (870) 595-4997. Check out your Rector, Arkansas website: www.rectorarkansas.com from time to time. I love to be told I need to update it and I take all suggestions to heart. Take a look.
Goodbye for now.
