Veteran's Day
On November 11, 1918 Germany and the Allied nations ended the bloodiest war in human history with the signing of an Armistice Agreement. No one surrendered. Both sides agreed to lay down their weapons and stop the fight. It was a war with no winner and a war that took the lives of around 19 million people and left another 23 million wounded. We now call November 11 Veterans day in the United States in order to pay tribute, not only to the casualties and survivors of World War I, but to include all the Veterans of all the wars the United States has fought in.
It’s a somber holiday as we remember all those lost in wars from the Revolutionary War to the current one. But we also celebrate the veterans who came home. Everyone who has served in the US military, who has put on one of the uniforms of our country’s warriors has stepped up, signed a contract to put their lives on the line for this country, for the betterment of humankind. They have earned the title of Hero. Today is their day. On the anniversary of the Armistice we stand together as a nation in support and gratitude for those who sacrificed so all of us can enjoy the freedoms our constitution granted us. Thank you. Thank you all. And don’t stop tomorrow. Anytime you have an opportunity, say thank you to a vet. And honor them by being deserving of their sacrifice.
Today is a cold and rainy Veteran’s day and it is going to get colder. Look out for a wintry mix by late this afternoon. I guess summer is truly gone now.
Congratulations to Tyson Vavak and Briana Johnson, the two Rector students of the Month for October. Teachers of both students commended them for helping others and Briana’s smile was mentioned as a contributing factor in this selection. Thanks to Glen Sain’s for sponsoring the Student of the Month program.
The Juniors and Seniors welcomed two Rector natives today. Alex Roofe and Cassidy Morgan came to visit and to share some of their career experiences. It is always good to have a little advice on handling things in the future from someone who has the experience.
Rector School District was one of four Arkansas schools to earn Wise Blue Star recognition for the 2018-2019 school year. Schools receiving the award had an 80% passing rate on the Wise Financial Literacy Certification Test and have either a majority of students on a given grade level take the test or achieve a minimum average score of 85%. Way to go Rector students and staff. Colleges and Employers are interested in knowing that students have the knowledge and skills to be financially savvy.
Don’t forget about the Rector Community Museum having the Third Thursday Mini-Concert. This month Lori Dial will be the featured guest. She will be at the museum at 7:00 pm on November 21. Come out and have a listen. Admission is free although we do pass the hat afterward.
A reminder that The Rector Community Center will hold its annual Fall Craft Fair on November 23. If you have not been a vendor before and want to jump in this year, or if you have not received your registration form, call Linda Robinson at 870 595-3035 for a registration form. It is a lot of fun for everyone involved. The snack bar will be open for breakfast and lunch. Believe me that alone is worth going in for. Mark your calendars. It is a good place to pick up some unique Christmas gifts and it’s inside so rain or shine we will be fine.
One more thing before I go. November 11 is also known for being one of my favorite German holidays. It is the beginning of Fasching, the carnival season. It begins at 11 minutes past ll:00 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month and continues until the stroke of midnight on Shroud Tuesday (Fat Tuesday). Yes it does bear some resemblance to Mardi Gras. Throughout this period parties and parades are prominent and everyone is encouraged to be a bit outrageous and break the rules. Yeah Germany is fun in the winter.
That’s it for this week. I am always updating the Rector website. Please take a look at the web page and let me know if there are updates or changes that need to be made. I do take suggestions and criticism fairly well. www.rectorarkansas.com . It’s your page for your town, so give me your input.
What else is going on that you would like to see in this column? Give me a heads up and I will share it with everyone else. Email: porchswing@newwavecomm.net . Phone number (870) 595-4997.
God bless our troops wherever they are.
