Rector Community Museum receives $1,000 donation from Entergy

At the meeting of the Rector Community Museum board on Friday morning, July 8, Entergy Customer Service Manager Matt Faries presented to Director Joey Pruett a check for $1,000 for the tuckpointing of the north wall of the Museum. The Museum’s goal is to show funds on hand enough to meet the requirements for a grant to repair the crumbling brick, especially on the north wall near the handicap entrance at the red awning.

Rector School Board hires new girls basketball head coach

Rector School Board made it official on June 30 when the board unanimously approved the recommendation of Superintendent Johnny Fowler to hire Bill Taylor as Rector’s new girls’ basketball head coach. NEA Sports magazine reported the hire as a major grab in the coaching arena with several coaches and fans around the area saying, “I thought he retired.” Taylor had coached at BIC and at Brookland in recent years and concluded 36 years in education but came out of retirement to take the helm at Rector with a good group of returning athletes. He will also teach classes in health and physical education according to Superintendent Fowler.

Full schedule awaits visitors at annual St. Francis Picnic

In keeping with their longstanding tradition, a full slate of pageants, food and fun is set for the annual St. Francis Picnic, being held this Saturday, July 16, to benefit the Hall and Gravel Hill cemeteries. The popular event is held the third Saturday of each July at the picnic grounds in St. Francis, with events and activities going on throughout the day. open for this year at 9:45 a.m. with the welcome address by Bro. Anthony Dowdy, pastor of St. Francis Baptist Church.

Large crowd attends annual Fourth of July Picnic

The weather was scorching hot for the 95th edition of the Piggott Fourth of July Picnic and Homecoming Celebration. The heat did not keep the enthusiastic crowd away from the parade or the picnic grounds. The annual picnic, which serves to provide continued maintenance and upkeep for the beautiful Piggott Cemetery, kicked off Sunday evening with the first three pageants and opening of the midway for rides and food. All of the pageant winners may be found elsewhere in this edition.

Terry Allen Pratt, 65 of Jonesboro, Ark., passed from his earthly home on Thursday June 30, 2022, at his home. Terry was born in Paragould on December 8, 1956, to his loving parents Tom and Margaret Crain Pratt.

Paul Bishop, 85 of Rector, Ark., passed away at his residence on June 23, 2022. He loved his family and spending time outside working in his yard and garden. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where he enjoyed singing hymns.
