Rector teacher, Bridgette Branson, has incorporated a family treasure into an Arkansas history unit for her students. She has used the book Kyota: The Legend of Spirit Lake, a historical fiction story written by Branson’s grandfather Pocahontas resident Aubrey Glen Mobley.

The Black River Technical College Foundation(BRTC) has received a $12,500 education grant from the Gene HAAS Foundation that will go to the Machine Tool Technology program. The Gene HAAS grant money will go toward student tuition, NIMS testing, and student memberships in SkillsUSA, said Machine Tool Technology Instructor Rick Barker.

As the opening game of the Friday night homecoming showdown with rival Marmaduke Greyhounds, the junior Rector Cougars dominated action throughout the contest. The game action played out with such speed that the junior Greyhounds found themselves shuffling their feet, being hit with several major turnover calls.
Opening the evening’s basketball contests, the junior Lady Cougars hosted the junior Lady Greyhounds in what would be a fifteen point margin of victory for the home team. The 35 – 20 final score was achieved with high pressure defense, unselfish play, great hustle, some three-pointers, and persistent rebounding. Commentators insist that defense is where victory begins and that was evident with the junior Lady Cougars on Thursday, Jan. 26, in the opening game of the double header against the Lady Greyhounds.
The night’s game against the Marmaduke Lady Greyhounds was part of Rector’s basketball Homecoming festivities with the theme There’s No Place Like Homecoming, a play on the Wizard of Oz. Indeed, the banners spread across the gym wall, said it all – “We’ll get you, you and your little greyhound, too.” Marmaduke always brings a loud student section, but the Cougar Den was pumped and ready for action.
