Kerry Eugene Turner Kerry Eugene Turner, 70, of Piggott, Ark., passed away February 28, 2023, at General Baptist Nursing Home in Campbell, Mo. He was born on September 14, 1952, in Piggott, and was the son of Alvis and Delora (Smith) Turner.
James Holland Threatt James Holland Threatt, 83, of Pollard, Ark., passed away March 5, 2023, at his home. He was born on June 20, 1939, in Garner, Tex., and was the son of the late James Arthur and Odessa Holloway Threatt.
Piggott School District held two meetings regarding the 2023-2024 school calendar with approximately 12 in attendance for the Thursday night meeting and 25 for the Monday night meeting. The choice will be between the traditional five-day week calendar or a new four-day week. With either option, the earliest school can start for the fall will be Aug. 14. Those who responded to the survey the school provided seemed to be split close to 50/50 on the choice. Those attending the meetings were predominately against the four-day week.
Rector City Council met Monday, March 6, at the Rector Community Center at 6 p.m. and worked through a manageable agenda. To begin, the minutes of both the regular meeting and a special meeting were approved. The special meeting was held last month to approve the purchase of a tractor to be used in mowing in the City of Rector.
Ten members of Clay County 4-H attended the daylong festivities on Feb. 28 to learn about state government meet legislators and share their 4-H experience.

The deadline for filing for the May 9 primary ended at noon on March 1 with the candidates filing for Piggott and Rector school boards drawing no opposition leaving the vote for sales tax continuation the only item on the ballot for May.
On March 24, 1873, Clay County, then known as Clayton County, was created by an act of the Arkansas Legislature. After creating the 67th county in the young state they voted to create Baxter County, which became the 68th county and shares the birthday. To mark the 150th anniversary, or sesquicentennial, several observances and celebrations are scheduled in the coming year. To kick-off the festivities the three Chambers of Commerce have joined forces to host special ceremonies at the two county courthouses, and working in conjunction with Harps Food Stores free birthday cake will be served.
The Piggott class of 2024 will be hosting a cornhole tournament on Saturday, March 11 at the Clay County Fairgrounds with proceeds to benefit Piggott High School After Prom. Entry fee is $30 and registration starts at 10 a.m.
