Grassland Conservation Reserve Program sign-ups recently announced by USDA

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that agricultural producers and private landowners can begin signing up for the Grassland Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) starting today and running through May 26, 2023. Among CRP enrollment opportunities, Grassland CRP is a unique working lands program, allowing producers and landowners to continue grazing and haying practices while conserving grasslands and promoting plant and animal biodiversity as well as healthier soil.

Clay County Sheriff ’s Department makes arrests

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department reports on Monday, April 10, 2023, they received a 911 call from a cleaning service about a vacant residence being broken into on Highway 90 close to Holly Island. The suspects that broke into the residence reportedly hit the front of the vehicle belonging to the people that were cleaning the house as they were leaving the property trying to get back to the highway. Before the Sheriff’s Department arrived, the suspects turned around and tried to tell the people cleaning that they had permission to get the property they were leaving with. The suspect’s statement did not check out. The suspects had a refrigerator and two air conditioners in the back of their truck that was taken from the vacant residence.

Rector Cougar baseball and softball suffer same day losses

Every ball field at Jeremy McDaniel Memorial Sports Complex was filled. Little t-ball teams, coach-pitch ball players along with their moms, dads, grandparents, siblings, and friends filled the stands. Other fans set up lawn chairs and playpens for the babies. Cheers, applause, mom’s yelling “run!” and coaches hollering above the fray to give instructions on base running and where to throw the ball played louder than any cheers on the high school Cougar and Lady Cougar fields.
