HPMEC to host photo exhibit

The Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center will be hosting the photographic exhibit entitled The Veneto of Ernest Hemingway: Across the River into the Trees. The exhibit is comprised of a series of beautiful black and white panels. The first series will be on exhibit from June 1 through June 30, 2023. This will be in the new exhibit room on the second floor in the museum.

Shirley Dean Dooley

Shirley Dean Dooley, 82, of Rector, passed from this world on May 24, 2023, at the Arkansas Continue Care in Jonesboro. Shirley was an active member of the First General Baptist Church until her health prevented her from going. She had been a Christian since her teens and was baptized in the Mayo ditch. She was on the Food Committee, Women’s Missionary Society, Adult Ladies Sunday School Teacher, Special Events Committee and wherever else needed.

Bobby Gene Johnson

Bobby Gene Johnson, 93, of Piggott,Ark., passed away Saturday, May 27, 2023 at the Piggott Community Hospital. He was born March 21, 1930 in Piggott, and was the son of the late Rossie Loton and Mary Belle Vaughn Johnson.

Cora Allean Price

Cora Allean Price, 96, departed this life May 22, 2023. She went through life as Allean. She was born August 17, 1926 in Rector, Ark., to John and Cora (Robinson) Holcomb. When she was a small child they moved to St. Louis, Mo., where her Dad worked for General Motor Fisher Body Division. At this time there were many layoff’s, so the family moved back and forth to Arkansas for many years.

Summer Feeding program set to begin June 5 at Piggott and Rector Schools

Once again this year, both the Piggott and Rector School Districts are taking part in the USDA Summer Feeding program. Under the federally-funded effort, all those under the age of 18 are provided free meals at local schools. The meals are the same for all children regardless of family income, race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. No registration is required for those attending.

Rector gives thanks for freedom

The VFW Post #10480 led by Post Commander Steve Ward presented the annual Memorial Day program before a modest crowd gathered under the stalwart Champion oak tree at Woodland Heights Cemetery. Commander Ward introduced Post member George Bearden who offered the invocation and later gave the benediction for the event which began at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
