Contributions being accepted for Ryan Rogers Memorial Scholarship

Contributions are being accepted for the Ryan Rogers Memorial Scholarship for the outstanding senior student-athlete at Rector High School. The scholarship is in honor of the late Ryan Rogers, who was the sports editor at the Clay County Times-Democrat and a great friend to RHS students. Teen Cuisine at Rector High School

Rector High School students in Sara Wright’s family and consumer science classes completed the Teen Cuisine cooking and nutrition educational lessons and labs with Clay County Extension FCS Agent Christin Holmes. Teen Cuisine is designed to teach youth important life skills to promote optimal health- both in the present and in the future. Key concepts about nutrition, food preparation and cooking, food safety, and physical activity using approaches and strategies that enhance learning and behavior change among teens were addressed.

Happenings at the library

May 11 – Second Thursday game night from 3:30 to 5 p.m. for grades five and up, but all are welcome May 12 – Teen First Aid Class from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Class is full May 13 – Made with Love (make and take flower bouquets) from 11 to 12 p.m. and 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Registration is required. Each session is limited to 12 people and the cost is $20 per bouquet.

Lip-Sync event set May 19

The Piggott Heritage Car Show lip-sync event will feature a Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute with special guest Van Halen. The event is set for 7 p.m., Friday, May 19, at the Piggott Community Center. Admission is $5 with proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Scott David Shockley

Scott David Shockley, 55 of Rector, passed from this life on Tuesday May 2, 2023 at his residence. He was born on March 11, 1968 in Detroit, Mich., to the late O.Z. Boge and Helen Vernie Purdom Shockley. Scott was employed several years as an associate at Walmart Superstore in Paragould. Scott will be missed by all that loved and knew him.

End-of-year school activities summarized at board meeting

Rector School Board met on Monday, May 8, at 5:30 p.m. at the Administration Building on the RSD campus, all members present. Both principals, Nate Henderson for RHS and Mark Manchester for RES, summarized the closing of school activities that are traditional for the district. Henderson also gave accolades to students of Kocaina Blount who passed the phlebotomy exam in the concurrent course coupled with the program at BRTC. He also praised the effort of AP Calculus teacher Isaiah Ritter who has been holding extra study sessions for preparation for the upcoming exam. Manchester reported that the K-2 achievement and growth scores that are returned immediately to the school showed tremendous effort on the part of students and teachers with “really, really good numbers, good scores.” He also acknowledged first grade teacher Lauren Dorman named as Arkansas North Rural Teacher of the Year (See article in the current edition of Clay County Times-Democrat featuring Dorman).
