Powhatan Historic State Park will host a summer workshop on pearl stringing from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 3. Park staff will teach participants how to make a necklace, bracelet or earrings from pearls. Freshwater pearls from the bottom of the Black River have been a large part of Powhatan’s local history. Park interpreters will talk about the history of the freshwater pearling industry on the Black River. The pearls to be used in the workshop crafts were not harvested from the Black River. Space is limited and reservations are required. Registration fee varies - $25 for a necklace, $15 for a bracelet and $10 for earrings. With speech, language, and swallowing disorders common following stroke, head and neck cancer, and a variety of other illnesses and injuries, Piggott-based speech-language pathologist Candace Mitchell, CCC-SLP, of Piggott Community Hospital encourages residents to learn the signs and seek an evaluation if they have concerns about themselves or a loved one. This is a timely message, as May is recognized nationally as Better Hearing and Speech Month.
With an opening date of June 3, 2023, the Farm Room inside the Rector Community Museum features farming and ranching implements all donated from those with farming heritage in the Rector area which includes Greenway and Boydsville areas. One of the most prominent features will be an original hewn oxen yoke donated from the estate of the late J.G.
What does the Bluebird Café in Nashville have in common with the Ford Room in Rector? TRIPPP has played both venues and the intimate setting in Rector is one of their most preferred. They will be headlining at the Ford Room on Thursday, June 15, for a night of music inside the Rector Community Museum.
At the Winter-Spring Athletic Awards event on Tuesday, May 16, held at the Rector Cougar Gym, the Rector High School Sports Hall of Fame awarded scholarships to twelve seniors, four $1000 awards, one $750 scholarship, and seven $200 grants toward books and supplies. The two highest awards must have recorded a 3.0 or above academic performance, have shown good citizenship, have demonstrated a measurable degree of community service, and excelled in high school athletic performance.
Memorial Day will be marked this coming weekend with special observances and activities. Both Woodland Heights Cemetery at Rector, and Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Piggott, will be hosting their annual business meetings and special ceremonies.
The weather was perfect for Saturday’s 24th annual edition of the local car show. The favorable forecast equated to a large turnout of both entries and spectators.
Once again this year, both the Piggott and Rector School Districts are taking part in the USDA Summer Feeding program. Under the federally-funded effort, all those under the age of 18 are provided free meals at local schools. The meals are the same for all children regardless of family income, race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. No registration is required for those attending.
Honors Day 2023 for Rector High School was held with the Class of 2023 taking the spotlight. Special honors, keepsake medals for the Valedictorian and Salutatorian, Landon Haywood and Evan Holmes, along with traditional recognitions were extended to the senior class as well as honor students from seventh grade through eleventh grade. Family, friends, members of the public attended the event held at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 19, in the Cougar Gym.
