Delta Youth Symphony Orchestra launching this fall
This fall the Delta Symphony Orchestra will be launching the Delta Youth Symphony Orchestra (DYSO) in Northeast Arkansas. In the first year of the program the DYSO is open to string students (violin, viola, cello, bass, harp, and piano) ages 12 to 18 who have at least one year of instruction on their instrument. Auditions for the 2023-2024 school year will be held on Aug. 27 in Jonesboro. There is no cost to audition. During the school year, the DYSO will meet two times a month and will present two performances (fall and spring) for family and friends. In order to participate in the DYSO, students must have access to their instrument. Tuition is $150 for the full school year. Tuition waivers will be considered on a need basis. Canning workshop set
Powhatan Historic State Park will host a summer workshop on canning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 15. Park staff will teach participants how to preserve food through canning. Staff will discuss the history of canning and give tips for making canning each. Participants will leave with a sample canned good made at the workshop. Delta Symphony Orchestra to offer Youth String Camp
The Delta Symphony Orchestra will offer its inaugural session of Youth String Camp this July. This day camp will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., July 10 through July 14 in Jonesboro. The program is open to string students (violin, viola, cello, bass, harp, and piano) ages eight through 15. Participants will have sectional and full group instruction each day and will present a recital for family and friends on the last day of camp. Confederate Memorial Day was observed earlier this month by the John L. Patterson Chapter 2682, United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Matt Pitt serves as mentor at HPMEC Writer’s Retreat
This year’s writer-in-residence for the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Writers Retreat is St. Louis native Matthew Pitt. Raised in St. Louis, Pitt now resided in Fort Worth and works as a professor at Texas Christian University.

1983 The Quorum Court gave unanimous approval Monday night to an emergency ordinance calling for a special election July 26 asking for a 1¢ county sales tax. The court maintains the tax is needed for county roads and maintenance, equipment and repair.
