Juvenile injured in fireworks accident

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department reports that at 7:01 p.m. on Thursday, June 29, they received a 911 call of a 17-year-old juvenile who had been injured while shooting fireworks under the St. Francis River Bridge at St. Francis. The Sheriff’s Department along with the Piggott Fire First Responders and the St. Francis First Responders were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, the youth was found to have serious injuries to his right hand. Air Evac was called, and he was transported to The Med in Memphis.

Full day of fun awaits at annual Pollard Picnic

Registrations are still being accepted for the Pollard Beauty Contests, being held in conjunction with this week’s annual picnic. The 2023 Pollard Picnic will be held Saturday, July 8, at Pollard and will benefit the continued upkeep of the New Hope Cemetery. In keeping with tradition, fried chicken dinners, music, softball games, games for children and beauty pageants will highlight the picnic. Recently, the organizers announced the following schedule.

Farewell reception held at HPMEC

Hemingway-Pfeiffer Education Center and Museum Director Shannon Williams hosted a farewell reception honoring Matthew Pitt who lived for the month of June in the apartment above The Market on the square in Piggott as Writer-in-Residence, a writing and mentoring program in its seventh year, underwritten by Piggott State Bank. Pitt’s experience in Piggott involved time for his own writing and mentoring eleven writers at the Education Center for a week.
