The 2023 Arkansas Rural Education Association’s Teachers of the Year are Lauren Dorman of the Rector School District and Christy Owen of the Magnolia School District. Dorman and Owen were each presented with a crystal apple gift and a check for $1,000 from the Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas.
Emilee Seegraves, the daughter of Paul and Heather Seegraves of Piggott, graduated from Baptist Health College in Little Rock with a ceremony held on June 12, at the Jack Stephens’ Center in Little Rock.
Despite the usual hot summer weather, good crowds were on hand for the traditional food, fun and pageants Saturday as the annual St. Francis Picnic was held.
1983 There will be a special election held Tuesday, July 26 in which the county is asking for a 1¢ sales tax. Clay County Judge Harry Niewald and the quorum court remind voters that the revenue from a sales tax is sorely needed.

Once again for 2023, members of the Piggott Community Alliance have joined forces to organize “Backpack Bash” for students of Piggott Elementary and Piggott High School. This year’s bash will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5, on the grounds of the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and the Matilda and Karl Pfeiffer Museum in Piggott.
The traditional slate of beauty pageants are scheduled in conjunction with this year’s Greenway Picnic, set for Saturday, Aug. 5, at the picnic grounds in that community.
Under the federallyfunded effort, all those under the age of 18 are provided free meals at local schools. The meals are the same for all children regardless of family income, race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. No registration is required for those attending.
