Runners and walkers are still being recruited for the annual Rector Labor Day 5K, set for 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2. The event, which benefits the RHS Helping Hands Foundation, will begin in front of the Rector High School gymnasium.
The annual Clay County Fair Parade is set for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16, and entrants are now being recruited. In keeping with tradition, the parade will begin at the First Baptist Church of Piggott, located a block west of the square on West Main Street, and will end at the fairgrounds. Line up and registration will start at 9:15 a.m. at the church and entrants are asked to be lined up by 9:30 a.m.
Rector School District teachers have been welcomed back to campus for the 2023-2024 school year with breakfast buffets and luncheons courtesy of community churches and businesses. The lunch on Wednesday, Aug. 9, was donated and served by Rector Helping Hands Foundation, chaired by Sherry Dills.
Carl P. “Buster” Hitt, born and raised in Piggott, Ark., just released his first novel, “Sarah: A Young Girl’s Struggle to Reunite her Family,” set in the Piggott area in 1954.

Former Blackcat standout athlete Ted Glaub, Rector High School class of 1966, has been named to the Rector High School Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the class of 2023. He will be inducted at the annual RHSSHOF luncheon on Saturday, Sept.
1983 Mrs. Betty Payne of Trumann has been employed as principal of Piggott Elementary School.
The Clay County Extension Homemakers will be hosting the Delta District Ice Cream Social at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the Family Life Center located on S. Taylor Avenue in Piggott. Persons are asked to RSVP by Aug. 11 to cholmes@uada.edu or by calling 870-598-2246. Hemingway-Pfeiffer group tours are also being offered on the hour for a fee of $10 for those interested. Those interested will need to note they are interested in the tour when contacting Christin Holmes.
