“Blame it all on (the late) Reuben Seay,” quipped Nita Bowden who told of Hutie Bowden’s first interest in fighting fire with the Rector Fire Department. She smiled as Hutie completed the story of how he and John Seay, Carolyn and Reuben’s son, grew up together, spending time at the Seay house.
1983 New teachers at the Greenway School District this year are Donna Bishop and Woody Priest. Bishop will teach Special Education while Priest will be the new Agri teacher.
Maynard alumni and friends of all ages, will come from various places, as well as local, and gather for an evening of fun at 5 p.m. on Saturday evening, Sept. 16, 2023, at the Maynard High School Cafeteria for the 33rd Maynard Alumni and Friends reunion. Many classes will be hosting reunions at this time. Please advise if your class and guests wish to be seated together.
The 43rd annual Maynard Pioneer Days is set Thursday, Sept. 14 through Saturday, Sept. 16. They’ll kick things off this year with “School Night” at 5 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 14, at the Pioneer Park and Museum. The festivities continue on Friday with craft booths, food and a free concert by Cory Jackson at 7 p.m. The annual parade is set for 10 a.m. on Saturday, with other activities including a turkey shoot at 1 p.m. There will also be crafts, concessions, blacksmithing demonstrations and music from Dixon Street. The Rector junior and senior high girls basketball teams are holding a community calendar fundraiser. The calendar will consist of birthdays, anniversaries, memorials, etc. and will be available for purchase later this year. The cost to have dates included will be $5.00 per each date listed. September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when Piggott Public Library joins the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide to remind everyone about the valuable resources available with a library card.
A demolition derby will be held Saturday, Sept.16 in conjunction with the Clay County Fair. The event will be held at the Clay County Fairgrounds. Peewee starts at 6:30 p.m. and the adult competition at 7 p.m. Those who want more information may call Rick Hardy at 573-344-1110.
