Clay County Fair Board holds monthly meeting

The monthly Clay County Fair Board meeting was held at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 8 in the fairground’s kitchen. The fair entry books are getting a major facelift this year, as well as moving over to a pre-register fair entry program. Casey Simpson has been working very hard on assigning new livestock classes as well as streamlining the procedure to get livestock entered into the appropriate market and breeding classes before the animals ever get on the fairgrounds.

PCH partners with Access TeleCare

Piggott Community Hospital is partnering with Access TeleCare to bring infectious disease specialists to its patients via telemedicine. Access TeleCare’s boardcertified infectious disease specialists will be available to support on-site care of patients requiring treatment of a difficult, unusual, or complicated bacterial, fungal, viral and parasitic infection, such as meningitis, sepsis, pneumonia, cellulitis and abscess, and HIV.

Rector has large crowds for day of totality

All the street lights in Rector came on. Birds searched for a place to roost. Turtledoves welcomed the dusk. Crickets started their serenade. The appearance of early evening darkened expanses of park land, fields, family acreage, and back yards as gatherings of neighbors, relatives, and new friends from afar viewed the same phenomenon known as the Great American Eclipse.

Former Rector basketball coach Jess Bucy dead at 93

Former Rector Blackcat basketball coach Jess Bucy died Tuesday, April 2, in Searcy, at the age of 93. A native of Rector, Bucy led two Rector junior high basketball teams to state championships in 1963 and 1967. His 1959 and 1965 high school teams were state runners- up. In total, Bucy spent 15 years coaching at Rector. His teams averaged 20 wins a season during that time. A total of 13 Bucy-coached teams won the Clay County Tournament. Later he served as the school superintendent.

Jewell Lavern Smith

Jewell Lavern Smith, Galena, Mo., daughter of Jude and Carrie Mae (Carter) Moore, was born on September 29, 1934, in Kennett, Mo., and departed this life on April 09, 2024, at the age of 89. Lavern was a social worker who had lived in the area for the past twenty-five years coming from Piggott, Ark.

Jess Bucy

Jess Bucy, 93, of Searcy, Ark., passed away April 2, 2024 in Searcy. He was born on October 29, 1930, in Rector,Ark., and was the son of Guy and Ethel (McKeel) Bucy.
