Avila enjoying Arkansas Boys State

LITTLE ROCK, AR (05/ 29/2024)— Jose Avila of Piggott was elected as a State Senator for his congressional district at Arkansas Boys State 2024, a summer leadership and civic engagement experience sponsored by the American Legion. Avila was elected by his peers during district elections on Tuesday, May 28, as part of the 83rd annual session of Arkansas Boys State, where students build a mock government structure, including eight different congressional districts each with three senators and 10 representatives.

Piggott Summer Reading Program begins

Readers of all ages are invited to participate in the Summer Reading Program at the Piggott Public Library as they present “Adventure Begins at Your Library.” The programs are at 11 a.m. Wednesdays during the months of June and July. The 2024 Summer Reading Program is open to children of all ages, with prizes, drawings, stories, reading logs, and more.

National Speech-Language-Health Month celebrated at Piggott Health System

These dedicated professionals play a crucial role in helping individuals overcome communication and hearing challenges, enhancing their quality of life. Piggott Health System would like to take this opportunity to express heartfelt gratitude for their expertise, compassion, and unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of so many. Kayli Lawrence, MS, CF-SLP and Candy Mitchell MCH, CCC-SLP provide speech-language pathology services to patients of all ages who are in the hospital, using home health, or in outpatient therapy.

Summer Reading Program begins at Rector Public Library

The Rector Public Library is geared-up for a busy June and July as the Summer Reading Program returns. This year’s theme is “Adventure Begins at Your Library.” The programs are at 9 a.m. Wednesdays during the month of June and will continue July 17. The 2024 Summer Reading Program is open to children of all ages, with prizes, drawings, stories, reading logs, and more.

Longtime PES counselor retires

Longtime Piggott Elementary School counselor, Barbara Batey is set to retire at the end of the school year. Batey began teaching in August of 1975 on “grade school hill” and taught 10 years in second grade and then served as elementary counselor for the last 39.

Piggott service for fallen soldiers

Piggott’s Memorial Garden Cemetery hosted services for Memorial Day, Sunday afternoon, May 26, as the traditional ceremony was held along with the usual business meeting. On Friday, in preparation for this event Mohawk athletes and coaches gathered along the beautiful rolling hills of the cemetery to place over 800 American flags on the graves of the veterans who are laid to rest there.

CCSD makes arrests

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department reports that on Tuesday, May 28 at approximately 6 p.m. they executed a search warrant at 154 CR 472 west of Greenway. After conducting a search of the residence and property, the Sheriff’s Dept. took into custody 33-year-old Joshua Ryan Dunham of Piggott. Dunham was transported to the Clay County Detention Center and booked in on possession of meth or cocaine with purpose to deliver GT 10GM but LT 200GM, simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms and possession of drug paraphernalia.
