The Clay County Quorum Court met in regular session on Monday, June 17 at the Corning courthouse with Justices Dennis Haines, Patrick Patterson, David Hatcher, George Lowe, Brad Green, Randy Kingston, Jody Henderson and Neal Smith in attendance. Justice David Cagle was absent.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Department reports that on Monday June 17,, 2024, at approximately 6:42 a.m. a deputy received a phone call about a truck at the boat ramp in St. Francis with all the windows broke out. The deputy, on his way to St. Francis, met a vehicle on U.S. 62 that had damage to the driver side of the vehicle. A traffic stop was made after the vehicle turned south on Hwy. 139 east of Piggott. When the deputy came in contact with the occupants, he discovered three of the occupants were covered in mud. After questioning them, the occupants said they had been stuck. That’s when they pushed the vehicle out and got covered in mud. At this time the deputy got another call about a 4wheeler left running in a fence row unoccupied on CR 352 west of St. Francis. The deputy released the subjects to respond to the calls he had already received.
The traditional mid-summer celebration returns next week with the 97th annual Piggott Fourth of July Picnic and Homecoming Celebration. The annual Independence Day celebration will be held Wednesday and Thursday, July 3 and 4.
Billie Jean Fielder, 95, of Greenway,Ark., passed away June 17, 2024, at home. He was born on September 8, 1928, in Rector, Ark., and was the son of the late William Orla and Lola (Oakley) Fielder.
Sharon Kay Binkley, a beacon of kindness and love, passed away on June 11, 2024, at the age of 64, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on June 21, 1959, in Rector, Sharon was a cherished daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend who left an indelible mark on the hearts of those she touched.
Kenneth Gene Bell of Las Vegas, Nev., passed away on Nov. 29, 2023, after a brief illness.
Monty Sanders, 74, of Piggott, Ark., passed away Friday, June 14, 2024, at his home. He was born on May 1, 1950, in Clay County, Ark., and was the son of the late Hershel and Lois (Redfarin) Sanders.
In May, more than 6,500 students at the University of Iowa received their degrees. Among that group, however, were more than 550 whose celebration of that personal milestone was twice as meaningful because they had successfully earned two degrees.
Camden Archer Mount graduated from The University of Mississippi Summa Cum Laude on May 11, 2024. To be eligible for a degree Summa Cum Laude, a student must have a gradepoint average of 3.90 or above on all college work attempted.
