A child’s smile that stretches ear to ear is a large part of the excitement that filled the Rector Cafetorium on Tuesday, April 22. The audience packed the space and was attentive and appreciative, laughing at the right places and giving spontaneous applause after each of the five scenes in the RES school play, Rainbow Fish. With a lesson about sharing and getting along with everyone, the fish in the sea included the beautiful Rainbow Fish who was consumed with her own beauty, a cartwheeling Starfish, a blubbering Barnacle. Little Fish, the fish who initiated the action by asking for one of the pretty scales on Rainbow Fish, was accompanied by a Sardine, Hermit Crab, Guppy, Shrimp, and a slow moving, slow counting Snail, and led by Ms. Minnow. Among the other fish were Pufferfish and Angelfish, so pretty and shiny. Several funny creatures included lobsters, a prawn, nautilus, humuhumu, a herring, haddock, and hake. Of course, an octopus with all its tenacles appeared. Behind the scenes was a competent stage crew. An ensemble of the younger children made up the portion of the play that narrated the fish as they swam through the sea to their destination. Ultimately, Rainbow Fish was encouraged to learn how to share and get along with other fish in the sea. After that lesson, Little Fish received some of the first glittery scales and all the fish were happy at the garden party.
