The schedule for the 2025 Clay County Fair has been set. This year’s fair will kick-off with the usual pageants on Saturday, Sept. 6. All of the pageants will be held in the Clay County Fair Grounds Commercial Building. There will be no pre-registration this year. Registration will be held 30 minutes prior to each scheduled event and entry fee for all pageants is $30.
Parks Cemetery, located 2 miles west of Rector, is in need of donations for the upkeep of the cemetery. “If you have loved ones buried at the cemetery we would appreciate your do-nation,” commented a spokesperson. A fundraising event will be held at Sugar Creek Country in Piggott, hosted by the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center, in conjunction with a reading retreat. Tickets are available for the club reception, featuring special guest Tim Huffman, an esteemed outdoor writer with 37 years of experience and native of Piggott.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Department recently reported at approximately 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 21, a Clay County Deputy was traveling east on U.S. 67 in Corning, when a vehicle pulled out of the Casey’s parking lot in front of the deputy. The deputy observed the driver appeared to be nervous and was constantly watching him in the rearview mirror. A check was run on the license plate which did not match the vehicle. The deputy attempted to make a traffic stop but the driver of the vehicle did not stop until West Elm Street in Corning. When the deputy came in contact with the driver, Cory Lawrence Poole, 35, of Fisk, Missouri, Poole was unable to prove any information about the vehicle. After running a check on the vehicle using the vehicle identification number, the vehicle came back stole out of Poplar Bluff, Missouri. The deputy conducted a search of the vehicle where Poole’s driver’s license and personal information was found. Also found was paperwork belonging to the owner of the vehicle. Poole was taken into custody and transported to the Clay County Detention Center where he was booked on the charges of theft by receiving, less than $25,000 but greater than $5,000, identity theft/financial fraud and fictitious tags. Poole also faces charges in Poplar Bluff.
The Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center held an informational community meeting on Monday, Aug. 18 regarding the National Heritage Area System. The meeting was held at the Matilda and Karl Pfeiffer Museum.
The Piggott City Council met in regular session on Monday, Aug. 25 with council members Jeff Benbrook, Tracy Cole and Jamey Parks present. Mayor Bradley Scheffler was absent.
The Clay County Fair will be held Tuesday through Saturday, Sept. 9 through 13, at the fairgrounds in Piggott. Keeping with recent tradition, the annual pageants will be held in conjunction with the fair Saturday, Sept. 6, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with the Baby Mr. and Miss Clay County pageants, and will continue throughout the day. The City of Piggott was saddened by the loss of former Chief of Police Jeremi Wicker, Sunday, Aug. 24, at the age of 48.
