Alvin Jay Vangilder

Alvin Jay Vangilder, 68, of Rector, passed away on March 6, 2023 at the St. Bernard’s Hospital surrounded by his family.

Alvin was an amazing and memorable man. He wore many hats throughout his life: son, husband, father, teacher, cotton scout, farmer..just to name a few. He was kind to all, a true teacher in and out of the classroom. He was so much to so many. He grew up as a true country boy. He went to college and became a Science Teacher at Piggott High School, teaching for 36 years. He loved cattle farming and he was a hard worker and caring man all throughout his life. He was a great friend to so many, a father who let his children know how much they were loved and cherished, a husband who loved his wife of 40 years, but above all he showed his family the love he had for his Lord and Savior. He served as deacon at the Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church for 32 years. He shared his praise through his voice singing in church on Sundays and around the home. He truly cared for all and that was part of what made him one of the “Greats.”

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents: E.J. and Amelia (Seay) Vangilder and an infant son: Benjamin Vangilder.

He is survived by his wife: Regina (Travillian) Vangilder; his children: Joshua Vangilder of Jonesboro and Sarah Vangilder of Rector; brothers: Dennis and Wanda Vangilder of Ralph, Ark., Andy and Jill Vangilder of Marmaduke, Ark., and a sister: Dianne and Jim Wilson of Siloam Springs, Ark., along with a host of family members and friends.

Visitation was held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 9, 2023, at the Irby-Mitchell Funeral Home in Rector. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 10, 2023, at the Irby-Mitchell Funeral Home. Interment was at the Woodland Heights Cemetery.
