Betty Carolyn Shelton

Betty Carolyn Shelton, a beacon of love and selflessness, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2024, in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Born on July 20, 1941, in Leonard, Arkansas, she was a cherished daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend whose gentle spirit touched the lives of all who knew her.

Betty grew up in the nurturing care of her parents, Albert Lavaun and Jeanetta Foster Keller. She found the love of her life in Dewey Shelton, and together they built a beautiful life filled with joy and laughter. Their marriage of 64 years was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Betty’s heart was heavy when she was preceded in death by her beloved Dewey, her dear son David Shelton, and her brother Jerry Keller.

Her legacy continues through her devoted son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Valerie Shelton of Marmaduke, and her adored grandchildren: Brittany (James) Hemphill, Matthew (Maria) Shelton, Haley (Ryan) Mitchell, Lindsey (Brent) Kopiness. Betty’s joy multiplied with the birth of her great-grandchildren: Lane, Brody, and Josie Hemphill; Evelyn Shelton; Henry and Charlotte Mitchell; Lucy, William, Brayden, and Emily Kopiness. She also leaves behind her loving sisters Brenda Scott, Vonetta (Leroy) O’Neal, and Ann (Troy) Shepard, as well as a daughter-in-law, Michelle (Greg) Ward and very special lifelong friend, Gloria Smith. A host of loving nieces, nephews, special relatives, and friends will forever cherish her memory.

Betty’s professional life was marked by her dedication as she sold Avon cosmetics for several years and later served as the office manager for Shelton Sanitation. Her work ethic and commitment to her roles were evident to all who worked alongside her.

of her family. She was a familiar face at her grandchildren’s ballgames, cheering them on with pride and enthusiasm. A savvy shopper, she delighted in finding a good bargain, a hobby that was only surpassed by her love of spending time with her family. The special trips she took with her sisters were among her most treasured moments, creating memories that her family will hold dear.

Betty’s character was defined by her loving nature, gentle demeanor, and selfless approach to life. She was the kind of person who put others before herself, offering support and kindness without hesitation. Her presence was comforting, and her actions were always guided by her immense heart and caring soul. Betty’s faith was an important part of her life, serving her Lord and Savior alongside her beloved husband and the congregation of Blue Cane General Baptist Church until its closing.

As we say goodbye to Betty Carolyn Shelton, we celebrate a life lived with grace and love. She was the cornerstone of her family, a true friend, and a shining example of the best of us. Her spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to feel the warmth of her smile and the generosity of her heart.

Visitation was held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Irby-Mitchell Funeral Home in Rector. Funeral services were held on Thursday, November 21, 2024 at 10 a.m. with Bro. Kim Bridges officiating. She was laid to rest beside her beloved husband at Woodland Heights Cemetery.
