Rector is buzzing with talk about the festivities for the upcoming Labor Day picnic. “The t-shirts are so cool. We like the bold design,” said several citizens. Parents and their kids are excited about the carnival beginning on Friday evening and running through Monday evening. “We’ve talked and talked about wanting the carnival to be available for the kids more than one day. I’m excited for the kids,” said Deana Mills.
Desserts and drinks (water and lemonade) will be available for purchase for $5 per person at the Rector Community Center multi-purpose room from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1. The event is being hosted by Rector First United Methodist Church with all proceeds benefitting the Woodland Heights Cemetery. Tables and chairs will be set up to provide a cool, comfortable opportunity to visit with friends and family. Free drink refills will be available.
Rector City Council met at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Rector Community Center. In old business, Council heard from City Superintendent that both 211 S. Main and 204 S. Main have been demolished and are in the clearing stage of debris removal. The third reading for the City Annexation Ordinance was tabled until Sept. 11 so that all parties could be present for discussion and the vote.
The Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center will be closed on Monday, Sept. 1 in observance of Labor Day. Those interested in reserving a tour may call the museum at 870-598-3487,
The Piggott Mohawk golf teams began their season with a victory Thursday, Aug. 14 as they played host to the Rector Cougars at the Sugar Creek Country Club.
The annual McDougal Homecoming Picnic is set for Saturday, Aug. 30, at Edna Cooper Park along U.S. Highway 62.
RECTOR’S FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
The Piggott School Board met in regular session on Tuesday, Aug. 12 with all board members present. School board president Jacob Richardson announced that the board meetings would now be starting with prayer.
Organizers of the annual Nimmons Old Timers Dinner note it’s that time of year again. This year’s dinner will be held beginning at noon on Sunday, Aug. 31, at the community center. Current, and former, residents of the Nimmons area are invited to attend, and bring a dish for the potluck meal. They’ll also be accepting donations at the door, with the proceeds going toward the continued upkeep of the Nimmons Cemetery.
