Lady Cougars defeat Corning, fall in District

The Rector Lady Cougars defeated the Corning Bobcats is a cross-county rivalry game with Mattie McClung and Rylee Wilburn leading the charge. Playing in the dark blue visitor jersey, the Lady Cougars bested the Lady Bobcats by a substantial margin at the end of quarter one, 31 – 13, holding off Bobcat runs. Many Rector attempts at 3-pointers bounced off the rim, but the steady passing and steals, plus passes to Wilburn who was often fouled, counted for points. McClung rebounded and was fouled, bringing the score to 42 – 28 at the end of three quarters. Several critical triple pointers fired in for Corning. The Cougar attempted matching shots but that plan did not prove fruitful. Karrin Henderson took a charge but only six points separated the teams. Rylee Wilburn rebounded at a critical point and blocked a shot, went inside and made the basket plus the bonus. McClung was fouled on the way to the basket. Emily Johnson grabbed a rebound, scored and the Lady Cougars defeated Corning by six points, 55 – 49. Rylee Wilburn had 21 points and 12 rebounds with 3 assists. Mattie McClung threw in 10 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, Maggie Rabjohn scored 12 points with 2 rebounds, and Anna Isom who suited up this game, scored six points.
