Black River Technical College Board of Trustees will hold its quarterly committee meeting at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 14 in the Pocahontas Room of the Richard Gaines Business and Technology Building on the BRTC Pocahontas campus.
On Dec. 3, Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas linemen along with electric cooperative linemen from Colorado and Oklahoma embarked on a mission to Guatemala to deliver electricity to 197 rural Guatemalans in 38 villages. The residents have never had electric service, so they will celebrate Christmas in a special way.
Downtown Piggott will be alive with the sights and sounds of the holidays on Saturday, Dec. 2, as the annual Christmas Fest and parade are held. Activities are slated from noon to 4:30 p.m. on the square, followed by the annual Christmas Parade at 5 p.m.
Izard County Cougars came to town for a Round 2 play-off game with the Rector Cougars after defeating Mountain Pine by a score of 54-44 though they had lost to Brinkley Tigers the week before in regular season play. On Rector’s home field, the Cougars defeated Woodlawn 48 - 0 in the Round 1 playoff game.

Piggott Public Library and Rector Public Library in conjunction with Arkansas PBS are hosting a Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood Sweater Drive from Nov. 1 through Nov. 30. The local libraries will be collecting new and gently used sweaters and other cold weather items. Collection boxes are available in Piggott at the library and the Chamber of Commerce office and at the library in Rector.
The Rector Cougars basketball teams opened season play on Tuesday, Nov. 14, sending out the Junior-B team, Junior-A team, and the Senior High boys team, minus three seniors who are still in football competition. The Junior-B team froze out the opponent as the seconds ticked down and came away with a 25 – 24 win against the Trumann Wildcats with Isaac Phillips and Eli Hamm making solid contributions. The Junior-A team clicked on the speed button and fired up the 3-machine in the first minutes, pulling in front by 11 – 2 over Trumann’s Junior Wildcat team. The halftime score was 22 – 15 with the Cougars in the lead. Gabe Prince, Ford Mills, Marcus Moody along with Collin Jetton led the charge along with Ben Schimming, securing the 50 – 31 victory.
The competitive spirit is always present when the Cougars and the Mohawks meet in athletic, or any, competition. Piggott returned only a couple of starters from their basketball team last year and miss their floor general.
