Drought affects area farmers

After experiencing heavy rains this spring, the thought of a drought was far from anyone’s mind. However, when the rains stopped, they stopped completely. The majority of the state is in moderate drought with some portions being in severe drought. The lack of rain, accompanied by extreme temperatures are causing irrigation systems to struggle to keep the crops hydrated, as they need two inches of rain per week in these extreme conditions.

Delta Symphony Orchestra to hold annual gala

The Delta Symphony Orchestra will hold its annual gala on September 10 at the Gardens at Harmony in Jonesboro. This year’s theme is Autumn in New York and the entertainment will feature a jazz combo band and performers from The Link Theatre Company. The 2022 Gala honoree will be Dr. J.D. Kelly (posthumous). Doors open at 6 pm. This is the primary fundraiser for the DSO’s 2022-2023 season and the event will also include a raffle and both live and silent auctions. Tickets will be on sale beginning Aug. 1. Ticket prices are $125 for an individual ticket and $900 for a table. Tickets can be purchased through Eventbrite, the DSO’s website, or by calling 870.761.8254. Canning class to be held at HPMEC

A “Peach Topping Preserves” canning class will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25 at the Education Center of the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum. Class size is limited therefore interested parties should sign up soon. This will be a hands-on class. Attendees will receive a recipe and a jar of the peach preserves to keep. LIHEAP application period begins July 25

Eligible residents can receive payment assistance for summer utilities. Officials with the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) have announced residents can begin submitting applications Monday, July 25 for help with the costs of summer cooling bills, including those from Entergy Arkansas and other utilities.

Quilting workshop planned

Quilting, a popular pastime, joined together not only pieces of fabric, but people’s lives. With this in mind, a Beginners Quilting Workshop has been planned at Powhatan Historic State Park. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, and the registration fee is $15. Organizers note participants will learn the basics of quilting: from piecing the squares, layering the quilt, and the quilting stitch. Fee includes all materials and class size is limited. John J. Pershing VA to host Veteran Art Exhibit

John J. Pershing VA Medical Center will host a Veteran Art Exhibit Sept. 12 through 16, featuring the works of local Veteran patients. Any patient of the medical center is eligible to participate in the local exhibit, which is open to 51 visual art categories. The exhibit will take place in the main lobby of the Poplar Bluff facility.

RHSSHOF announces 2022 inductees

The Selection Committee of the Rector High School Sports Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the 2022 inductees into the Rector High School Sports Hall of Fame. The organization has four categories from which inductees may be selected: athletes, coaches, teams, and other.

MURRAY HEADED TO NATIONALS

Lane Murray, son of Johnna Murray and Kevin Murray, ranked third in the 11 and under in the Arkansas PGA Junior Tour in Little Rock on July 19. This qualified Lane to compete in the Nationals in Tulsa on August 1 and 2.
