Viola Ruth Threlkeld Byrd, 99 years, three months, and nine days, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Friday, July 8, 2022, in the comfort of her sister Melva’s home in Piggott, Ark. Viola Ruth Threlkeld, a descendant of Sir Lancelot de Threlkeld, Lake District, Cumbria, England, member of the Privy Council of Elizabeth I, Queen of England, was born on March 29, 1923, to Evret Reed Threlkeld, (son of Elnora Stalions and Ulie Threlkeld) and Ora Belle Smith, (daughter of Winnie Hill and Mack Smith), in Brown, Ark., a community near Manila.
Large crowd attends annual Fourth of July Picnic
The weather was scorching hot for the 95th edition of the Piggott Fourth of July Picnic and Homecoming Celebration. The heat did not keep the enthusiastic crowd away from the parade or the picnic grounds. The annual picnic, which serves to provide continued maintenance and upkeep for the beautiful Piggott Cemetery, kicked off Sunday evening with the first three pageants and opening of the midway for rides and food. All of the pageant winners may be found elsewhere in this edition.
Morris and Webb next performers in ‘Cash Porch’ Music Series
Arkansas State University Heritage Sites, KASU public radio, and the Mississippi County Hospital System will sponsor the second installment in the summer concert series, “Live from the Cash Porch,” at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, July 16.

The traditional slate of beauty pageants are scheduled in conjunction with this year’s St. Francis Picnic, set for Saturday, July 16, at the picnic grounds in that community.
