The USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service announced recently that $5 million in competitive grants are being made available to enhance efficiency and access in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program through process and technology improvements.

Arkansas State University will hold its 2022 Spring Commencement ceremony at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 7, in Centennial Bank Stadium. The event is open to the public and seating for family and friends will be first-come, first-choice at the ceremony.
Liberty Hill Cemetery will host its annual decoration day on Saturday, May 7. A business meeting will start at 11 a.m. with a potluck dinner following at noon. Those interested in making a donation to the cemetery may do so at First National Bank or mail to Mike Cook, 853 Castleberry, Piggott, Ark., 72454.
The Purcell Cemetery board meeting will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at the Rector Community Center. No food or drinks will be available at the meet-ing. “If you have family or friends buried at the cemetery or just love old cemeteries, please come and support the cemetery meeting,” commented secretary Joyce Huckabay. Contributions are being accepted for the Ryan Rogers Memorial Scholarship for the outstanding senior student-athlete at Rector High School. The scholarship is in honor of the late Ryan Rogers, who was the sports editor at the Clay County Times-Democrat and a great friend to RHS students. On Tuesday, April 26, RHS students received a fantastic workshop on writing resumes and job interviewing tips from Big River Steel’s HR Manager, Tonya Stallings. Stallings reviewed several resumes received by her company and thoroughly discussed both the good and bad examples, with the real names being changed. She encouraged students to create professional email addresses for the purpose of communicating with potential employers. Students were surprised to hear real-life examples her company has received over the years. Additionally, included in her handouts for the students was a copy of Practice Interview Questions. She encouraged students to review them and prepare answers for each. “At some point, more than likely, you will be asked some of these questions during an interview. You need to have a good answer prepared for each of them.” she stated. Big River Steel is located in Osceola and will be expanding. The new mill should be ready in about 18 months and will need 700 more employees. “We would like to thank Mrs. Tonya for coming and sharing information about careers at Big River Steel and helping prepare our students for the workforce,” commented RHS career coach Kathy Fowler. The watercolor and graphite sketch artistry of Madison Cate May was displayed in the dining area of the Rector Community Center at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 1, and art patrons took the early part of the afternoon to enjoy the art and light refreshments. Rector High School seniors Hayley Naney (left), Lexi Green (center) and Haven Wilson recently completed the Phlebotomy Program and earned Certificates of Proficiency from BRTC. These young ladies attended classes at RHS in the mornings then traveled to BRTC- Paragould for classes in the afternoons this semester. All three plan to attend BRTC in the fall to further their education.. but the certificates they earned will allow them to work while going to school. (Courtesy photo)
