Holmes, Burns attend Arkansas Girls State

Emma Holmes and Kaelyn Burns represented Rector High School at the annual Arkansas Girls State on the campus of Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas, from May 26 through May 31, and not only participated in a firsthand government workshop, but saw decision-making at its grass roots. The choices leaders must make weigh health and safety vs. previous plans and expenses. At least 70 delegates of the 700 people on the Harding campus connected with Girls State became ill and samples from the 70 infected were sent to the Arkansas Department of Health who diagnosed the ill with a norovirus, a highly contagious virus. The leadership notified parents and guardians and told them to “pick up your daughter as soon as is possible within safety parameters.” The decision to close the annual meeting was based on the health and safety of the delegates, the staff, and the leadership. The cities and counties in the mockstate government were filled with elite students from high schools representing all counties in Arkansas. The American Legion Girls State motivates delegates to develop leadership and integrity.
