The Governor’s Scholastic Honors Day was held Saturday, May 4, 2024, at the Governor’s Mansion in Little Rock. Scholastic Honors Day recognizes Arkansas’ best and bright-est students. Schools are encouraged to select two students in the senior class who best represent excellent academic achievement.
Special Olympics Arkansas Area 1 began its torch run on Monday, May 20, with the torch being carried by local law enforcement. Officers from all over the state will carry the Flame of Hope in their cities from which the iconic flame will make its way to Little Rock.
Future and current small business owners have several options in June to participate in a free learning opportunity through the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center (ASBTDC) at Arkansas State University.
The Piggott School Board met in regular session on Tuesday, May 14 with all members in attendance. First on the agenda was the monthly Mohawk Moments with band director Kyle Allmon, Sarah Benbrook and Rebecca Allmon giving updates on the achievements and growth of the band. Benbrook also presented updates on the computer science class. Superintendent Freddie Bowen gave updates on the achievements of the FBLA and FCCLA along with a reminder of the upcoming trip to Iowa for Cassie Knight’s PACE class who will be competing in Odyssey of the Mind world finals.
Once again this year, both the Piggott and Rector School Districts are taking part in the USDA Summer Feeding program. Under the federally-funded effort, all those under the age of 18 are provided free meals at local schools.
Members of the Arkansas State Trumpet Ensemble from Arkansas State University have received the prestigious honor of being asked to perform at the 2024 International Trumpet Guild Conference in Anaheim, Calif., May 28 through June 1.
In observance of the Memorial Day holiday, all federal, state, county and local offices will be closed on Monday, May 27. The closures include both Clay County courthouses, the three county libraries, all local city halls along with state and federal government offices.
The summer 2024 Hemingway-Pfeiffer Writers’ Retreat for adults is scheduled June 17-21. Registration is $325. Lunch and breaks are included. Retreats are held in the Educational Center and Hemingway Barn-Studio and offer adults the opportunity to work on personal creative writing under the direction of a professional mentor.
Rector School Board met in regular session at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, May 13 at the Administration Building and approved several personnel changes and approved the salary schedule for 20242025 school year.
