Piggott eighth grade students took turns taking tours of the Piggott Community Hospital on Friday, April 12. The students gained insights to what medical services are available and the job opportunities the hospital has for them if they decide to go into the medical field.
Under beautiful sunny skies, the event that science enthusiasts have been looking forward to for several years was a sight to behold. The total solar eclipse on April 8 lived up to the hype and excitement that had been building for months, as this area was lucky enough to be in the path of the totality and what a show it was.

A farmer who can’t sell imperfect tomatoes at the market may turn them into a value-added product, like spaghetti sauce, ratatouille, or salsa. With a little imagination, the same option is available for any number of agricultural products, such as spent brewer’s grain for dog treats, or hemp seed for lotions and soaps.
The Arkansas Master’Singers, in collaboration with the Williams Singers, are set to take the stage for a concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at Manley Chapel on the campus of Williams Baptist University.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Department reports on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at approximately 6:30 p.m. a Clay County Deputy was on patrol north of Corning on CR 142, when he was flagged down by an individual who said a black mustang had been seen trespassing on their property. The deputy was also advised that the vehicle was at a bridge on CR 181. The deputy went to check on the vehicle and noticed it stopped on the bridge just east of CR 181. The deputy made a stop on the vehicle, and made contact with two individuals. A check was done on both individuals, and both showed to be on probation with a search waiver on file. A search was conducted on the vehicle and individuals. Taken into custody and transported to the Clay County Detention Center was 28-year-old Johnathon Luke Colburn of Corning. He was booked on the charges of possession of meth or cocaine LT 2 GM and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The Piggott School Board met in regular session on Tuesday, April 9 with all members in attendance. This was the first meeting with newly elected board members Fallon Winscott and Kristen Crittenden.
Former Rector Blackcat basketball coach Jess Bucy died Tuesday, April 2, in Searcy, at the age of 93. A native of Rector, Bucy led two Rector junior high basketball teams to state championships in 1963 and 1967. His 1959 and 1965 high school teams were state runners- up. In total, Bucy spent 15 years coaching at Rector. His teams averaged 20 wins a season during that time. A total of 13 Bucy-coached teams won the Clay County Tournament. Later he served as the school superintendent.
All the street lights in Rector came on. Birds searched for a place to roost. Turtledoves welcomed the dusk. Crickets started their serenade. The appearance of early evening darkened expanses of park land, fields, family acreage, and back yards as gatherings of neighbors, relatives, and new friends from afar viewed the same phenomenon known as the Great American Eclipse.
