Ryan Rogers Chili Cook-off a success

The annual Ryan Rogers Chili Cook-off and Supper was held on the customary last Saturday in February with over 26 entries of chili, soup, and jambalaya that fed over 170 diners. The late Ryan Rogers won the community center’s first chili cook-off with “fat man chili,” his famous recipe that included a bit of brown sugar.

Zany and successful Craig Snow headlines Rector Chamber banquet

Perhaps he needed only a tiny bit of encouragement to connect with audiences, big and small, the baby boy, the youngest of seven siblings, children of the late Ben and Rena Snow. A “zany, rascally guy,” Craig Snow became a larger-than-life local stage celebrity beginning with a bit part while in sixth grade, playing “little boy in the window.” Retired drama teacher Gail Burns, a superencourager, saw a diamond in the rough, a youngster with boundless potential and energy, not only for the local stage but in his life’s direction. She groomed him for larger roles and a larger stage in life. As a dynamic teacher, she encouraged his exuberant personality. By 1982, his senior year in high school, Snow was comfortable with many situations, crazy enough to go out on a limb to entertain as well as empathize and put people at ease with his effervescent smiles and charming, easy manner.

Piggott Fire Department gifted AED devices

The Piggott Fire Department received four AED (automated external defibrillator) devices from Utility Manufacturing on Tuesday, Feb. 27. These devices are helpful when someone is ex-periencing sudden cardiac arrest by delivering an electrical shock to help the heart establish rhythm. The combination of CPR and an AED is effective in saving lives when used in the first few minutes following a collapse from sudden cardiac arrest.

Powhatan School of the Lady offers programs

The Historic Powhatan School of the Lady is a school for ladies interested in re-enacting the 19th century. In two and a half days, it covers subjects that engage all levels of living history, from beginners to masters. Participants will learn about all aspects of life that pertain to 19th century women including etiquette, sewing techniques, cooking, history, music, personal hygiene and more.
