The year 2023 will be remembered for a variety of reasons, as was shared on the pages of the CCTD. It was a year of change on the local political scene, great success in the world of local sports and concern for the future in the face of a changing economy. The following is the first in our look back at the year that was.

Lake Charles State Park will offer a First Day Hike Monday, Jan. 1, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the park, 3705 Highway 25, Powhatan. The event is free and open to the public. Participants will meet at the Swim Beach Parking Lot.
United States Deputy Sheriff ’s Association trainers conducted an Active Shooter Response/ Tactical Entry training course for the Piggott Police Department, Clay County Sheriff ’s Department, Rector Police Department, Piggott School Police and the Corning Police Department on Sunday, Dec. 10 at the Piggott Elementary School. “We would like to thank all the trainers as well as all the participants from each department. We would also like to thank the Piggott Elementary School for allowing us to use their facility,” commented a spokesperson for the Piggott Police Department.
Piggott businessman and longtime community activist, Danny Brown, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023, at the age of 77.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has launched an online application for Direct Loan customers. More than 26,000 customers who submit a Direct Loan application each year can now use an online, interactive, guided application that is paperless and provides helpful features including an electronic signature option, the ability to attach supporting documents such as tax returns, complete a balance sheet and build a farm operating plan. This tool is part of a broader effort by USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) to streamline its processes, improve customer service, and expand credit access.
