Summer Feeding program set to begin June 5 at Piggott and Rector Schools

Once again this year, both the Piggott and Rector School Districts are taking part in the USDA Summer Feeding program. Under the federally-funded effort, all those under the age of 18 are provided free meals at local schools. The meals are the same for all children regardless of family income, race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. No registration is required for those attending.

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month

With speech, language, and swallowing disorders common following stroke, head and neck cancer, and a variety of other illnesses and injuries, Piggott-based speech-language pathologist Candace Mitchell, CCC-SLP, of Piggott Community Hospital encourages residents to learn the signs and seek an evaluation if they have concerns about themselves or a loved one. This is a timely message, as May is recognized nationally as Better Hearing and Speech Month.

Powhatan State Park to host workshop June 3

Powhatan Historic State Park will host a summer workshop on pearl stringing from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 3. Park staff will teach participants how to make a necklace, bracelet or earrings from pearls. Freshwater pearls from the bottom of the Black River have been a large part of Powhatan’s local history. Park interpreters will talk about the history of the freshwater pearling industry on the Black River. The pearls to be used in the workshop crafts were not harvested from the Black River. Space is limited and reservations are required. Registration fee varies - $25 for a necklace, $15 for a bracelet and $10 for earrings. HPMEC to host photo exhibit

The Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center will be hosting the photographic exhibit entitled The Veneto of Ernest Hemingway: Across the River into the Trees. The exhibit is comprised of a series of beautiful black and white panels. The first series will be on exhibit from June 1 through June 30, 2023. This will be in the new exhibit room on the second floor in the museum.

Mary’s Chapel Cemetery meeting set June 11

The annual Mary’s Chapel Cemetery meeting will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 11, in the conference room of the Rector Community Center. Anyone with ties to the cemetery is urged to attend and help support the cemetery. Anyone interested in making a donation toward the upkeep of the cemetery may do so at any Regions Bank location to the Mary’s Chapel Cemetery Fund. You may also contact Perry Mills at 870783-0109.

Summer canning workshop to be held

Powhatan Historic State Park will host a summer workshop on canning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 1 and Saturday, July 15. Park staff will teach participants how to preserve food through canning. Staff will discuss the history of canning and give tips for making canning each. Participants will leave with a sample canned good made at the workshop. Both workshops will cover the same topics. Space is limited and reservations are required.
