Early voting for the Hospital Tax election started Tuesday, May 2 with election day being Tuesday, May 9. The only issue on the ballot for Piggott is the continuance of the one cent sales tax which supports the Piggott Community Hospital’s emergency room.
1983 Deneika Harris is the valedictorian of the Greenway senior class. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Devon Harris. Andy Small is the salutatorian of the Greenway High School senior class. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Junior Small.
The Clay County Detention Center will be hosting an open house for the general public from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 7. The County Judge Mike Patterson and Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole encourage everyone to come and look at the renovated detention center that belongs to the citizens of Clay County. “A lot of time and money has been spent to repair the jail in order to get it reopened. We are very close,” commented Cole.
Black River Technical College (BRTC) hosted National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS) Instructor Mike Blizzard who taught six instructors from across Arkansas the ins and outs of NIMS accreditation.
A new performance series will be presented by the Historic Dyess Colony: Johnny Cash Boyhood Home. The Sunken Lands Songwriting Circle will be held in Riceland Hall at Fowler Center, located at 201 Olympic Dr., Saturday, Aug. 12. This event will be hosted by Rosanne Cash along with performers Rodney Crowell and Sarah Jarosz.
Rector City Council meeting Monday night at 6 p.m. at the Rector Community Center began with a major decision to move forward with implementation of new Arkansas law that allows condemnation and ultimate burning of condemned structures under the direction of the Rector Fire Department and under the supervision and inspection of Joe Pence. Structures at 722 S. Greenville and 601 E. 3rd Street have been titlesearched, have met all requirements of the condem-nation ordinance, and were condemned, showing no ownership and no liens on the property. Council member Mark Manchester made the motion to proceed with the next steps, seconded by Council member Lark Sigsby. For the environment, as many shingles as possible will be removed by a backhoe. All members voted in favor. The final action and resolution will be presented at the June council meeting.
Black River Technical College recently awarded the Spring 2023 Nightingale Scholarship to awarded to Madison Stokes of Rector, Chrisanna Nagy of Jonesboro, and Sydney Dye of Paragould. Stokes is a Practical Nursing student.
Piggott City Council met in regular session on Thursday, April 27, with all members present. The minutes and financial reports were approved then the council went on to other matters.
