1983 Coach Dennis Adams led his pee wee boys’ basketball team to another victory when they brought home the first place trophy from the Pee Wee Tournament at Delaplaine. Team members are: Bradley Linam, Jimmy Bowman, Wade Harris, Junior Cato, Pat McNatt, Randy McMillin, John Bass, Tommy Johnson, Charlie Cook, Christopher Carroll, Bryan Lynch, Jerry Midkiff and Tim Hill.

NYITCOM at A-State accepting applications for ‘Project H.E.A.R.T.’ summer program in Jonesboro and Arkadelphia

New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine at Arkansas State University (NYITCOM at A-State) is now accepting applications for Project H.E.A.R.T., the college’s “mini-medical school” program for high school students which will be held in June in both Jonesboro and Arkadelphia.

Rector City Council meets, swears in new fire chief

Rector City Council met in regular session on Monday, April 3, at the Rector Community Center. The first order of business to come before the council was the introduction of and induction of Steve Ward as the new Rector Fire Chief. He was sworn in by Rector Mayor Shawn Brandon. Ward received the commendation of current fire staff in addition to fire staff leadership and through interviews.

Emmanuel Baptist Church to host Easter celebration

Emmanuel Baptist Church of Piggott will host its annual Easter celebration with a full schedule of special events and activities for Easter weekend. The church, which is located at 829 East North Street at the corner of North Johnson Street in Piggott, will kick things off this Friday at 6 p.m. with the traditional carry the cross. Everyone is invited to join in as members of the congregation carry the cross from the Piggott square to the church.

Rector School Board approves changes regarding certified teachers’ salaries

Rector School Board moved its monthly meeting ahead by one week to get implementation agendas started and strategies addressed as they relate to the first year under the LEARNS Act, the “largest overhaul of the state’s edu-cation system in Arkansas history.” Changes to education contained in the act have brought both optimism and nervousness to school staff members, students, and their families. “Rector Schools will be just fine. We are in good shape,” said Superintendent Johnny Fowler in a separate interview prior to the board meeting held at 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 3, in the administration building.

BRTC CTC hosts high school preview days

Black River Technical College (BRTC) Career and Technical Center (CTC) hosted several preview days in the month of March. Nearly 600 students from Piggott, Rector, Marmaduke, Pocahontas, Walnut Ridge, Sloan Hendrix, Corning, Hillcrest, Hoxie, Maynard, Paragould, Greene County Tech, and Brookland High Schools visited both the Pocahontas and Paragould BRTC locations.
