Black River Technical College Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Brad Baine and Director of Career, Technical, and Concurrent Education Darenda Kersey recently gave presentations at the Jonesboro Rotary Club.
The 4-H Tech Changemakers are excited to announce a workshop on Microsoft Word Document and other digital questions and answers. The workshop is free and open to everyone. The next workshop will be held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, March. 15, at the Rector Public Library located at 121 West 4th Street.
Powhatan Historic State Park will host an Archaeology Open House from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday March 24. Visitors are encouraged to join park staff and archaeologists from the Jamie C. Brandon Center to explore an archaeological excavation and visit the historic town of Powhatan to see how archaeology comes to life. Visitors will also have an opportunity to explore historical documents in the nearby archives at NEARA and participate in living history to bring the town to life. This event is free to the public. The Rector High School chapter of the FFA will host its annual dinner and auction beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 25. The event will be held at the Rector Community Center and all funds generated will benefit the local chapter. Organizers noted donations for the auction are also still being gathered, and are appreciated.
Black River Technical College Career and Technical Center recently hosted Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) employee Carissa Dougherty, who works specifically at the Forrest L. Woods Nature Center in Jonesboro.
The American Red Cross will hold two blood drives from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 13 at the Rector Community Center located at 740 East 9th Street and from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 20 at the Piggott First United Methodist Church located at 188 North 3rd Avenue.
The Piggott class of 2024 will be hosting a cornhole tournament on Saturday, March 11 at the Clay County Fairgrounds with proceeds to benefit Piggott High School After Prom. Entry fee is $30 and registration starts at 10 a.m.
Although it is still several weeks away, the Piggott Area Chamber of Commerce reminds local residences to begin to make their plans for the annual Piggott City Wide Yard Sale. This year’s sale will be held Saturday, April 1, and sales held that day will not be required to purchase a permit from the city. The City of Piggott has also waived the fee for Friday, March 31. Locations will also be featured on a list, which will be available from the Chamber of Commerce. On March 24, 1873, Clay County, then known as Clayton County, was created by an act of the Arkansas Legislature. After creating the 67th county in the young state they voted to create Baxter County, which became the 68th county and shares the birthday. To mark the 150th anniversary, or sesquicentennial, several observances and celebrations are scheduled in the coming year. To kick-off the festivities the three Chambers of Commerce have joined forces to host special ceremonies at the two county courthouses, and working in conjunction with Harps Food Stores free birthday cake will be served.
Dalene Woods, RN at the Piggott Community Hospital Emergency Room was recently awarded recognition to the UAMS Stroke Champion Bronze Club. This award is to acknowledge her quick response to a recent stroke patient who presented to the ER. Dalene recalls that the hospital ambulance was called to a local business to help an unresponsive patient. When the patient arrived to the ER, EMS and ER staff assessed that the patient may have been suffering a stroke. Dalene contacted UAMS via telehealth, performed the stroke scale assessment, and gave the medication. Within 30 minutes the patient was able to talk and the deficits were starting to reverse. At that point the patient was transferred to a certified stroke center for ongoing care. Dr. McComb, who worked in the ER with Dalene that day, said “She did great!”
