Unofficial results released by the Clay County Clerk’s office for the May 13 Rector School Board Election and millage increase shows 297 votes were cast with 259 for and 38 against the increase. Kirk Ford ran unopposed for another term on the school board.
Piggott and Rector to host ceremonies
At the May City Council Meeting held Thursday, May 8, at the Rector Community Center, a conundrum regarding zoning and trailer homes within the city arose. The Council took plenty of time to discern what was of concern to residents. As explained by several individuals, zoning ordinances are confusing and, in some cases, conflicting. Packets distributed to petitioners for requesting a variance contain language too vague to convey an absolute.
Rector School Board met in regular session on Monday, May 12, at the Administration building. After hearing from both building level principals regarding the conclusion of spring testing season, the board approved the Superintendent’s financial statement for April, 2025. The Operating Fund balance is recorded as $1,277,886.26, Building fund at $4,729,768.30 and when combined with Federal funds, cafeteria funds, the total fund assets is approved at $5,864,863.69.
The Piggott School Board met in regular session on Tuesday, May 13 will all board members present. For the start of the meeting, band director Kyle Allman gave the board a review of the progress and accomplishments of the band.
The Governor’s Scholastic Honors Day was held Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the Governor’s Mansion in Little Rock. Scholastic Honors Day recognizes Arkansas’best and brightest students. Schools are encouraged to select two students in the senior class who best represent excellent academic achievement.
The Rector High School graduation program was encapsulated by the Valedictorian, Emma Holmes, and the Salutatorian, Austin Simmons, in their addresses on Sunday afternoon, May 4, in the Rector gymnasium. Both graduates gave accolades to the entire Rector community along with their parents, teachers, and fellow students for contributions to a special Graduation Day.
Piggott Police Chief Sam Poole reports that on May 5, 2025, two suspects were arrested for attempting to pick up prescription medications with a fraudulent prescription from a pharmacy in town. The prescriptions had been called in on April 25 and employees at the pharmacy had determined this was a fraudulent prescription.
Piggott and Heritage Park will soon come alive with the rumble of car engines as the Piggott Heritage Car Show hosts its 26th annual show. Entrants from several states participate every year for this highly anticipated event for street rods, classic and custom cars and trucks, as well as motorcycles of all genres.
The Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center (HPMEC) has named author Snowden Wright of Yazoo City, Mississippi, as the writerin-residence for the summer.
