Arkansas Territorial Exhibit to end Sunday

Stories abound inside the Ford Room where the Arkansas Territorial Exhibit is housed along with displays of local early history and geography charts and maps. Those who have visited the exhibit this past week have been most interested in the varying county boundaries, the location of Scatterville, Boydsville, Greenway, Blue Cane, and Chalk Bluff. Towns that once were bustling river ports that are no more (Poke Bayou, Hopefield) have generated memories surrounding family stories and old home sights. Connie Niederkorn knew that Poke Bayou became Batesville, a town rich in Arkansas history. Her family homeplace has been maintained there. Research led to discovering Hopefield was located where Mound City (Fireworks City) across the Mississippi River from Harbor Town in Memphis is located.

LIHEAP application period underway

Eligible residents can receive payment assistance for summer utilities. Officials with the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) have announced residents can begin submitting applications Monday, July 25 for help with the costs of summer cooling bills, including those from Entergy Arkansas and other utilities.

Rector Labor Day Pageant schedule set

In keeping with event tradition, a full slate of pageants will be held in conjunction with the 2022 edition of the Rector Labor Day Picnic. This year’s pageants are scheduled for both Sunday, Sept. 4, and Monday, Sept. 5, on the beauty revue stand of Memorial Park. And, with the exception of Monday night’s Miss Rector Pageant, the events are open to all.

Clay County Health Unit to host back to school immunization clinic

The Clay County Health Unit will be hosting an immunization clinic from 9:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9. Walk-ins are welcome or an appointment may be made if desired. They will be offering vaccines that are required for school as well as having a drawing for door prizes. The health unit is located at 1009 South Garfield in Piggott. Anyone wanting additional information may call 870-598-3390 from the hours of 9:30 a.m. until 6 p.m.
