Piggott School Board meets

Piggott School board met in regular session on Tuesday, Sept. 10 with all board members present. Reading of the previous month’s meeting was waived and financial report was accepted. For the Mohawk Moments, Superintendent Freddie Bowen acknowledged the second grade staff for completing the first knowledge unit of CKLA and allowing students to dress as their favorite fairy tale or tall tale character.

Probation search results in drug arrests

Clay County Sheriff’s Department reports that on Monday, Sept. 9, 2024, at approximately 9:32 p.m. they conducted a probation search at 667 Church Street in St. Francis, the residence of 37year-old Zachery S. Russell. Once the sheriff’s department entered the residence, they came in contact with 5--year-old William Harley Russell. Russell had a warrant for Failure to Appear in Clay County Circuit Court on the charge of Certain Persons Possessing a Firearm. After a search was conducted, both subjects were transported to the Clay County Detention Center.

Annual Labor Day Picnic celebrated

Just before the majority of pageants began, organizers said, “We’re keeping an eye on the weather and will announce the location of pageants by 1 p.m.” At 1 o’clock, the clouds parted, and a pleasant breeze blew through Rector to add a wonderful endorsement for the weekend’s festivities. Though frogs and drenched picnic tables and benches dominated Sunday’s events requiring some stands to move because the booths were flooded, organizers persisted and it all paid dividends.

1984 School has started in Piggott and superintendant Fletcher Chasteen told the local board Monday night that he is pleased with the initial enrollment of 1,005, up about 40 students from last year. A petition has been filed with the Clay County Clerk to increase the county library tax by .7 of a mill.
