1984 School has started in Piggott and superintendant Fletcher Chasteen told the local board Monday night that he is pleased with the initial enrollment of 1,005, up about 40 students from last year. A petition has been filed with the Clay County Clerk to increase the county library tax by .7 of a mill.

Agri department receives grant

Piggott Agri teacher and FFAsponsor, Casey Simpson, along with his students are excited for the new upgrades to their equipment thanks to a grant Simpson applied for and was granted. Simpson applied for a Modernization Grant through the Arkansas Department of Education Division of Career and Technical Education.

Entries sought for fair parade

As in times past, the annual Clay County Fair Parade will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10 and entrants are now being recruited. In keeping with tradition, the parade will begin at the First Baptist Church of Piggott and will end at the fairgrounds. Line up and registration will start at 6:30 p.m. at the church.

Traffic stop leads to drug arrest

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department reports that on Monday, Aug. 26 at approximately 12:45 a.m. a Clay County Deputy was leaving the Corning Police Department when he noticed a vehicle being driven partially in the turn lane northbound on U.S. 67. The vehicle was behind a semi-truck. The deputy pulled out behind the vehicle and observed the vehicle swerve several times into the turn lane. The deputy noted he thought the vehicle was going to pass the semi. After the vehicles went through the stop light the deputy noticed the vehicle, a blue 2024 Jeep Gladiator, had a temporary tag that had expired on July 29, 2024.
