The third annual observance of Confederate Memorial Day was observed on June 8 by the John L. Patterson Chapter 2682, United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Liam Purcell and Cane Mill Road will present a concert of bluegrass and acoustic music at the next KASU-FM Bluegrass Monday concert. The concert will be at 7 p.m.
Once again this year, both the Piggott and Rector School Districts are taking part in the USDA Summer Feeding program. Under the federally-funded effort, all those under the age of 18 are provided free meals at local schools. The meals are the same for all children regardless of family income, race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. No registration is required for those attending.
The Piggott Cemetery Association will host the annual Fourth of July Picnic and Homecoming Thursday, July 4. The first four pageants will kick off the celebration on Wednesday, July. Festivities will continue Thursday morning at 9 .m. with the annual parade. In honor of the Olympics being held in Paris this summer and in support of the USA teams, this year’s theme is “TEAM USA.” Leading the parade as grand marshals will be Sue Hoggard and Lottie Gookin.

As part of its Strengthening Institutions Grant activities, Black River Technical College (BRTC) recently presented NEA Regional Intermodal Authority a check for $12,000. The funds are to defray expenses that NEA Regional Intermodal Authority will incur during its work in helping guide BRTC in conducting a needs assessment, identifying the Durable Skills workforce employers statewide seek, and assisting in curriculum development and employability assessments.
Collectors get pleasure from the hunt for a special item, from the preservation of items that showcase history, from the different kind of beauty that is in the eye of the beholder. The Rector Community Museum hosted a tractor show on Saturday, June 1, that brought in nine antique tractors and four modern ones. During the Labor Day parade, some of the tractors weave down Main Street, but these were parked behind the museum so people could get close to the antiques.

1984 A lengthy discussion concerning construction details of the new Middle School building was held at Monday’s meeting of the Piggott School board. The Board plans to meet again June 25 to further review plans for the new structure.
